Strikethrough

d̶o̶n̶e̶

Some characters may not display on all devices or platforms.

This is not markdown. A strikethrough text generator crosses out words with Unicode combining marks you paste into plain-text fields where tilde wrappers never render. Discord markdown and GitHub comments understand ~~strike~~ when the renderer is on. Bios, captions, and nickname boxes usually do not. This tool attaches a combining stroke to each letter, skips spaces so words stay readable, and lets you pick long stroke, solidus, short stroke, strike plus underline, or underline only. Type done to preview d̶o̶n̶e̶ in long stroke mode, copy the string, and paste where rich text is unavailable.

What is a strikethrough text generator?

A strikethrough text generator attaches combining long stroke, short stroke, solidus, or underline marks to each letter in your input. The base characters stay the same while a line appears through or under them. This works in plain text fields where bold or markdown strikethrough is not available on the platform you use.

This is not markdown. Tilde wrappers need a renderer. Combining marks ride on normal letters as real Unicode code points you copy like any other text. Discord may accept both in the same channel. An Instagram caption usually keeps only the Unicode version because there is no markdown pass on save.

Example: typing done with long stroke selected produces d̶o̶n̶e̶, four base letters each followed by U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY. Screen readers may announce both the letter and the mark, which sounds odd. Do not use Unicode strikethrough for critical accessibility content when markdown strikethrough is available instead.

How do you copy Unicode strikethrough text?

Type the phrase you want to cross out, pick a strike style from the mode selector, preview how the combining marks sit on each letter, then copy. Spaces stay unmarked so the line does not turn into one unreadable blob. Paste into chat, a bio, or a caption and confirm the stroke survives on your phone before you post a spoiler publicly.

  1. Type visible text into the input box. The demo fills it with `done` if you want to see long stroke marks on a short word immediately.
  2. Choose a mode: Long Stroke for classic cross-out, Solidus for a diagonal slash, Short Stroke for a tight line, Strike + Underline for stacked drama, or Underline only.
  3. Preview how each letter carries its combining mark. Unmarked spaces keep word boundaries clear.
  4. Click Copy to place the crossed-out Unicode string on your clipboard.
  5. Paste into your target field, save or send, and reopen the message on a second device if the platform might strip marks.

Which strike style fits which plain-text field?

Long stroke is the default cross-out for spoilers and joke corrections. Solidus reads sharper on dark backgrounds. Short stroke fits tight nickname columns. Strike plus underline stacks two marks and fails more paste filters. Underline only works when you want emphasis without crossing the word out. Pick the lightest style that still reads on your target app.

StyleHow It RendersWhere It WorksBest For
Long stroke U+0336Horizontal line through the middle of each letter, classic crossed-out lookDiscord messages, Instagram captions, Notion page titles that accept combining marksSpoiler tags, sarcastic corrections, and joke strikethrough in plain bios
Solidus U+0338Diagonal slash through each glyph, sharper than a horizontal stroke on some fontsChat apps with dark themes and bios where horizontal lines look faintEdgy nicknames and short phrases that need a visible slash on mobile screens
Short stroke U+0335Tighter horizontal line that sits closer to the cap height on many Latin fontsNarrow fields with character caps, such as Discord nicknames at 32 charactersCompact crossed-out words when long stroke feels too heavy in a small bubble
Strike + underlineTwo combining marks per letter: long stroke plus underline stacked on the same base characterPermissive editors that allow deep combining mark stacks; often stripped on strict mobile clientsDramatic meme lines when you accept that paste may flatten the stack on save
Underline U+0332Line below each letter without crossing through the glyphPlain-text bios and captions where underline toolbar formatting is unavailableEmphasis and faux links in fields that block rich text but keep combining marks

Where does Unicode strikethrough survive pasting?

Unicode strikethrough survives in fields that store full UTF-8 and skip aggressive normalization: chat messages, many captions, and note apps that render combining marks inline. It fails when clients strip marks for accessibility or layout. Markdown strikethrough is cleaner on platforms that support it. Unicode is the portable fallback when the field has no formatter at all.

Does Unicode strikethrough work on Discord?

Discord accepts Unicode strikethrough in messages and nicknames, and many text channels also render markdown ~~strike~~ when you are not inside a code block. Unicode works everywhere plain text is accepted, including places markdown does not run. For accessibility in public servers, prefer markdown when the channel supports it and reserve Unicode for nicknames or channels without formatting preview.

Why does strikethrough text break on some Instagram captions?

Instagram captions and bios are plain text with no markdown renderer, so tilde wrappers show as literal characters. Unicode combining marks are the practical way to cross out a word in a caption. Story editors and effect layers sometimes flatten marks when you add filters on top of the same line. Paste a short test phrase, publish or save, and view the post on a phone before you rely on a spoiler string in a public caption.

Can you strikethrough text in a Notion page?

Notion page titles, callout text, and database property fields often accept pasted Unicode with combining marks intact. Native Notion strikethrough from the formatting toolbar is usually better for team docs because it exports cleanly and reads well with assistive tech. Use this generator for quick crossed-out labels in plain property cells or synced blocks where you cannot open the rich-text toolbar on mobile.

What should you expect from Unicode vs markdown strikethrough?

Markdown needs a renderer. Unicode rides on every letter.

Unicode strikethrough works in plain text boxes with no formatting toolbar. Markdown strikethrough needs a surface that parses tildes, such as Discord markdown mode or GitHub comments. Unicode crosses letters anywhere text is accepted. Markdown is cleaner for screen readers when the platform supports it. Copy-paste portable Unicode shows strokes in bios; unsupported markdown shows raw tildes.

Strike plus underline mode stacks two marks per character. That looks dramatic but can fail on apps that limit combining mark depth. If lines disappear after paste, step down to long stroke or short stroke before you assume the platform blocks all strikethrough. The clipboard holds real code points. The server keeps whatever passed validation.

What people ask about crossing out text

What is a strikethrough text generator?

A strikethrough text generator adds Unicode combining marks that draw a line through or under each letter. You type plain text, pick a strike style, and copy the result. It works in plain text fields where you cannot toggle formatting, such as many social bios, captions, and nickname boxes that ignore markdown.

Is this strikethrough text generator free?

Yes. This strikethrough text generator is free with no signup and no watermarks on your crossed-out output. Conversion happens entirely in your browser and your text is not stored on a server after you close the tab. Cross out as many phrases as you need for spoilers, jokes, and sarcastic captions.

When should you use markdown instead of Unicode strikethrough?

Use markdown ~~strike~~ in Discord channels, GitHub comments, and other surfaces with a formatting renderer and preview. Screen readers handle markdown strikethrough more cleanly when the platform supports it. Use Unicode combining marks when the field is plain text only: Instagram captions, many bios, and nickname boxes with no toolbar. The clipboard holds real code points either way.

Why did my strikethrough lines disappear after paste?

Some apps remove combining marks to protect layout or accessibility. Strike plus underline stacks two marks per letter and fails more often than a single long stroke mode. Switch to a lighter strike style or paste into a different field on the same platform. If lines vanish everywhere on that app, the client blocks combining Unicode entirely.

Can you use strikethrough text in a username?

Some Discord servers and social apps allow combining marks in nicknames and display names. Crossed-out usernames are hard to read in member lists and friend search on mobile. Paste your strikethrough name, save, and check readability on a narrow screen before you keep it. Avoid strike styles on accounts where friends need to find you quickly.

Is there a character limit for strikethrough text?

This tool does not limit input length. Each letter adds one or two invisible combining marks, which increases byte size for long strings. Instagram bios cap at 150 characters, TikTok bios at 80, Discord nicknames at 32. Short spoiler phrases and one-line jokes work best inside those limits.
