How the 3D effect is built
Each letter is stacked dozens of times, one step apart, along the angle you choose. The side color gets darker the further back it goes, which gives the extrusion a sense of shading. A soft drop shadow underneath grounds it, and the front face can be a solid color, gradient, chrome or rainbow.
Tips for great 3D text
- Contrast faces and sides. A bright front with a dark, saturated side, like lime on hot pink, reads instantly even as a tiny thumbnail.
- Angles between 30° and 60° look most natural. 90° pushes the depth straight down.
- Blocky fonts like Bungee, Anton and Black Ops One extrude cleanly. Thin scripts don't hold up.
- Transparent background makes it easy to layer the text over a photo in Canva or Photoshop.
3D text for YouTube thumbnails
Thumbnails get viewed at around 200 pixels wide, so keep it to two or three words, push the depth high and add a thick outline. The PNG downloads at 1200×630, which crops nicely to a 16:9 thumbnail.
