YouTube Thumbnail Text: Fonts and Layout Tips
Most people see your thumbnail on a phone, at a size smaller than a stamp. Text that looks great full screen can disappear at that size.
Fewer words, bigger letters
Three to five words is the sweet spot. The title already explains the video, so thumbnail text should add a hook, not repeat the title.
Fonts that survive small sizes
- Heavy, condensed fonts like Anton, Bebas Neue or Bungee.
- Avoid thin scripts and light weights.
- All caps is easier to read when tiny.
Contrast tricks
- A thick dark outline around bright text.
- 3D extrusion or a hard drop shadow.
- A solid color box behind the words on busy images.
You can make outlined 3D text with a transparent background in the 3D text generator and drop it on your image in any editor.
Placement
YouTube puts the video length in the bottom right corner, so keep text out of it. Put text on the opposite side from a face so both stay visible.
Test it tiny
Zoom your thumbnail out to around 160 pixels wide. If you cannot read it in one second, cut a word or make the letters bigger. For export tips, see how to make 3D text online and transparent background graffiti.
