Discord Text Formatting and Fancy Fonts Guide
Discord has two ways to style text. Markdown formatting works in messages. Unicode "fonts" work almost anywhere, including nicknames and server names.
Markdown cheat sheet
| Type this | Result |
|---|---|
| **text** | Bold |
| *text* | Italic |
| __text__ | Underline |
| ~~text~~ | Strikethrough |
| ||text|| | Spoiler (hidden until clicked) |
| `text` | Inline code |
| ``` text ``` | Code block |
| # text | Large header (start of a line) |
| > text | Quote |
You can combine them, for example ***bold italic*** or __**bold underline**__.
Fancy fonts with Unicode
Markdown does not work in usernames, nicknames or channel names. Unicode styled letters do, because they are characters, not formatting. Generate them with the fancy text generator and paste.
Things to watch for
- Some servers block nicknames that are hard to mention or search.
- Screen readers may read styled letters strangely.
- Heavy glitch text can be removed by moderators. See why zalgo breaks Discord.
Want strikethrough in other apps too? The strikethrough text generator makes a Unicode version that pastes anywhere.
