Markers for Graffiti Sketching: What to Use
You do not need an expensive set to start. You need the right type of pen for each job: outline, fill and highlight.
The three types that matter
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol markers | Smooth fills, blends, fades | Bleed through thin paper |
| Fine liners | Clean outlines, details | Use waterproof ink or it smears under markers |
| Paint markers | Bold opaque color, highlights | Slow to dry, can clog |
A budget starter kit
- One black waterproof fine liner (0.5 or 0.8 mm).
- One thick black marker for heavy outlines.
- Three alcohol markers: a light, a medium and a dark from the same color family, for fades.
- One white gel pen or paint pen for shine marks.
Order of work
- Sketch in pencil.
- Fill with markers first, light colors before dark.
- Outline last so the line stays crisp.
- Add white highlights at the very end.
Paper matters too
Alcohol markers need thick or marker-specific paper. Put a scrap sheet behind your page. If you want to plan letter shapes before you spend ink, preview them in the graffiti font generator and read how to start a blackbook.
